
Yes, social skills should be worked on at school. If he doesn’t have the roots, he cannot do the other things. Does the child have that skill? Then why are they being told to do something? Match up each goal (that you are considering) to a tree root. When you look at the social skills below, look at the roots of the tree. Why don’t we teach others to work harder at being friends with people who are different from us? Disabled kids already have enough on their plate. Social Skills Goals is something we should all be working on. My point being, all kids and even adults, struggle with social skills at some point in our lives. Even still, students with autism get really pigeon-holed or stigmatized into the “lacks social skills” corner. Regardless of disability, all kids can have some struggles with social skills. It may be as simple as a social story about making friends. Moms, stick with your gut instincts and keep advocating. In particular, the part in the beginning about micro and macro changes that we make to our kids’ lives. If you haven’t already, please watch the video embedded above. Often when a child lacks social skills or social cognition, it is perceived to be cognitive and academic deficits. We can get it put into their IEP, but we must spend an extraordinary amount of time and energy helping our kids develop social skills.


Some students will enjoy answering questions, hearing your answer, and even asking students questions. After getting to know your students with these questions, you can easily incorporate explaining why they come to speech therapy and discuss their speech goals. Having a set of ice breaker questions can be a lifesaver when working with new students, especially if you have to prepare a quick first session with little prep time.

Using them in articulation or fluency intervention is helpful when testing and working on sounds and strategies in carryover. Using conversation starters can help them while working on necessary skills such as answering and asking questions, body language, turn-taking in conversations, and other nuances of social interactions. It can be tricky to provide more insightful conversation starters for your students to answer – especially the older ones! I know what it feels like to desperately need GREAT questions to use with my students in sessions.
